The knowledge, tools and experience have existed for some time now to make not just sustainable communities, but communities that are a joy to be a part of. Sadly the biggest obstacle to implementing these new communities is not the technology or cost, but rather the ironic fact that they are illegal by current building codes and zoning standards. Sustainable Hawaii examines these issues and proposed strategies for changing this situation.

FOOD SHORTAGE CRITICAL .......... GET READY AT HOME

Wake up North Kohala HOME FOOD storage and PRODUCTION IS CRITICAL

As an elder said at the recent food workshop…. “When the ships don’t come … have 72 days of food stored well in the house or do it right with a great garden but do one or the other and do it now !!!!!! the next year or two is very scary at the global level.”

MAYOR CITES NORTH KOHALA AS BEST CANDIDATE FOR SUSTAINABILITY

Our Sustainable Kohala Action Team just spent a few hours with Mayor Billy Kenoi of the Big Island. Beside being a regular guy, the newly elected Mayor is really up to speed on the challenges of becoming more sustainable as an island. One of his strongest comments was, "If sustainability is going to happen anywhere on this island, North Kohala is the place where it can work." Billy strongly supported the series of talk-story sessions our group is having with community leaders to build a unified voice for positive change.

HILO -- Agriculture has been one of the linchpins of the Big Island economy.

Yet with all the lip service county officials give agriculture and agricultural sustainability, they've been reluctant to put their money where their mouth is.

WATER WATER ....ALL AROUND BUT DO YOU KNOW HOW TO USE IT?

As it says in the great Hopi prophecy. Do you know where your water is?
We can perish without water before we perish without food. Dehydration is a very quick way to go. Being smart about water is a wise choice anywhere.

KAAUHUHU ROAD HOMESTEADS CREATE NEIGHBORHOOD PLAN

There are fourteen homesteads along Kaauhuhu road on either side of the transfer station and running about a half a mile down from Kinnersley road.

This adventurous group has collected info about the food, water, transport, and power holdings of each homestead and created a meeting area for emergencies. In this way they can collect immediately make plans and support people in need.

They have a half dozen pick-up trucks, two back-ho's, a water purifier, some hunting equipment, fishing equipment, and some interesting combinations of garden foods in case of emergency.

FOOD SECURITY Real deep food security means Pacific style agro-forests everywhere ...now!

A recent guest lecture in Hawi sponsored by Sustainable Kohala Ohana
presented an island pioneer in food security Craig Elevitch.

Craig Elevitch has been in the food game quite a while. He like others have had the complete look at what we have now in the food pipe line in Hawaii. And what we have in that pipe line is for the most part all we have. It didn’t used to be that way so we know we have to turn the whole game around because we live in times where the pipeline could easily get shut off. OIL EMBARGO! 90% plus of OUR food comes from OFF these islands!

DEEP READINESS IDEAS

OHANA SUSTAINABILITY

This is a copy of a deep readiness
List used by a friend for the people
Who live near him.

1. Water is the first priority during an emergency. Please list on a separate sheet of paper … the possible ways you can think of to catch, save, and share water and use it for all our normal functions.

2. What kinds of power have you got (ie candles, kindling, and firewood) and what kind (gasoline, natural gas, a generator) do you think we need?

3. Name the kinds of food you have discovered on this land or in a nearby gulch? Do you harvest it?
