BEAUTY … LIFE FORCE … FLOW STATE FARMING
ARCTURUS JIM
People want to get back on the land. The feelings of box world and babylon are driving the smart young people into the hills and valleys. They are finding the small farms now owned by elders who need a break from the daily chores. But these young people bring something more. They have already begun the design of a neo-tribal, festival based culture. So they will be building a playful space to dance, and drum, and keep the life-force as happy as the plants want to be. BEAUTY is part of their scene … no more plain suits, plain hair, plain manners or happy day small talk. They want to be authentic and alive !
My contribution after spending twenty years on a sustainable botanical garden …is one where beauty becomes as important to the psyche as the food is to the Lifeforce. Permaculture is a great way to understand the productivity of a food-forest but if you take that too far …you end up in a dark forest without a dancing circle and ponds to swim in, and cozy nests to be intimate in. Here is a short course in making your garden beautiful enough to make you dizzy with delight. The crops are still there …its just a matter of arranging more like a store window. After planting the ago forests as islands you end up with lots of edges. Thats where you can arrange the most tasty and beautiful bio art.
First rather than thinking farm … think botanical oasis. Then don't just think rows of ground crops think stands of agro forest. Then instead of just gravel roads think meandering grass pathways that can handle vehicles when needed. Don't just think mansion house with lots of bedrooms …think little sleeping houses tucked into aromatic bushes. Don't think we need to blot the sky out with biomass … think view planes dotted with magic trees on little hillocks and the rest of the place in guilds of flowering bushes and trees with hidden oasis spots inside. Don't think water tank, think swimming pondwith a pump to start the irrigation. Don't just think a direct road from the highway to the house think meandering view-based road with curves that direct your attention to special views. Don't think one road where you can see everything think one road that is loaded with art that tells the sorry of the tribe inside and another to keep strange but needed recyclables and tractors. Don't think dining room think family kitchen where everyone can collect and sing dinner onto being. Don't think you need a family that swears allegiance to some principle or another think of an oasis where people come and go and trading scheme is very versatile.
Soon I'll follow with images and examples of how to begin the see the difference between a row flat farm and a tiered forest farm where you don't plant everything fresh every growing season. You will see what a farm that flows like a magic garden looks like … it is just a matter of layers … but if you don't se that in your mind you wasn't get there. Enjoy!
