The knowledge, tools and experience have existed for some time now to make not just sustainable communities, but communities that are a joy to be a part of. Sadly the biggest obstacle to implementing these new communities is not the technology or cost, but rather the ironic fact that they are illegal by current building codes and zoning standards. Sustainable Hawaii examines these issues and proposed strategies for changing this situation.

A NEW LAND FOOTPRINT FOR PEOPLE EVERYWHERE

ECO OASIS
far more than a farm

NATURE + CULTURE > LIFEFORCE

What invention in this century would equal the industrial revolution of the last century? In my work as a social architect I see a great pull for everyone to get back to the land and nature. I see a far further exploration of her potential and our good fortune should we learn to play with her on a much grander scale. In my quest to find new footprints for us to make that uber connection with the earth I have finally come to the ecoOASIS. This is a multi-purpose landscape with a culturally diverse team on-board.

LIFE FORCE LIVING in the rainforest tribes

Story from Superonsciousness magazine

What are some of the greatest things that you learned by living among these people?

KA:The greatest of things that I learned was of a light heart. . . .
I learned these truths to be self-evident:
- That all beings are created equal and are equal creators, and are endowed by their Creator(s) with certain unalienable powers
- That among these are beauty, love, divinity and magical wisdom

THE ARE THE BASICS FOR SURVIVAL IN THE COMING TIMES

WATER

The most critical substance
We need drinking, washing dishes, washing clothes. and flushing toilet grade water.
Everyone buys two clean five gallon buckets with tight tops and handle for foraging.
Each house has two clean garbage cans with top and a tarp to catch water from rooves.
Building corners have new hose drops to organize the catchment there.
Everyone knows we have a big 3500 gallon collapsible tank ready for set up.

COMMUNITY WIDE HARVEST IN NORTH KOHALA

by Andrea Dean

Well…we did it! Planning for the first Community Harvest Hawaii was an exercise in trust–we were planning a large community food event where we didn’t know anything in advance. Important things such as how much food we would have to work with, what kind of food and how many people were coming to eat! But in true Kohala community fashion everyone pitched in, we had a LOT of food and everyone got to eat and enjoy. The community contributed:
-30 pounds of taro
-80 pounds of pumpkin
-4 pounds of green beans

LAND USE FOOTPRINT FOR ECO- HOMESTEAD

THE ECO-HOMESTEAD AT ARTESIA
FOOTPRINT FOR THE FUTURE

ARTESIA is a footprint for the future of land use in Hawaii and other places. It attempts to optimize the way the land is cultivated and settled to bring full benefits to the earth, the botanical yield, the life of the land, and the quality of life of those who dwell there. It is a three-acre ag parcel situated 1100 feet above the town of Hawaii on the big island of Hawaii. The director of this strategic design is social architect Jim Channon who has 40 years experience in this profession.
